The city of Monterey, CA has two main areas, downtown and Cannery Row, separated from each other by the Presidio of Monterey.
Made famous by John Steinbeck in his novel of the same name, Cannery Row was in the 1920s and '30s a colorful area brimming with sardine canneries and picaresque characters.
Today, Cannery Row is just as lively, but boutiques, galleries, and cafes sure to delight the sophisticated traveler and the Monterey Bay Aquarium have replaced the canneries.
Carefully restored downtown Monterey, or Old Monterey as it is sometime called, features a collection of historic buildings and the popular and Fisherman's Wharf.
